University of Seville

Founded in 1505, the University of Seville (US) is a reference in the city’s social and cultural life. It is the second largest university in Spain in terms of student numbers. Nowadays, it welcomes more than 70000 students and it employs around 5000 teaching and research staff and 3000 non academic staff. With more than 30 faculties, schools and other centres, it offers a wide variety of undergraduate and master's degree programs, covering all five major areas of knowledge. Furthermore, it safeguards an artistic heritage made up of thousands of works of art.

The University of Seville is strongly committed to internationalization. Every year, the mobility call offers almost one thousand destinations around the world, in around 55 countries. Furthermore, its catalogue of official university degrees contains tens of double undergraduate degree and double master’s degree programmes offered both by the University of Seville and another international university.

With more than 500 research groups, it ranks among the Top 10 Spanish research universities (in terms of publications). It is the first university in Andalusia in getting funds from the European Commission framework programmes. Through the Joint Research Centres, the University of Seville has set up strategic alliances with other research institutions (especially the Spanish National Council for Research, CSIC), strengthening collaborative research in areas of common interest, in order to increase productivity and competitiveness.

The University of Seville owns an extensive historic-artistic collection amounting to thousands of pieces. Its Library is an essential tool for teaching and research. It offers a rich and varied collection of more than 2 million paper and electronic documents in multiple formats. The “Fondo Antiguo” section of the library, which houses ancient books, largely digitized and containing more than 200 incunabula, stands as one of the best in Spain. The Library is friendly and open to users, providing access to a vast collection of scientific journals, electronic resources, and publications, all available through the internet. The Library of the University of Seville offers also an extensive array of services to support your students. This includes group study rooms, which can be booked online, and a laptop loan service.

The University has an innovative cultural policy based on avant-garde ideas to develop art in all its forms. The headquarters of Seville’s cultural engine is the Center for Cultural Initiatives (CICUS), located in the centre of the city. Photography and painting exhibitions, dance, theater and music festivals (jazz, classical), shows or film series are just some examples of the wide cultural offer open to university students and visitors.

The University of Seville Modern Language Center (Instituto de Idiomas, IDI), supports the teaching and learning of languages throughout the University. It does so flexibly in accordance with the needs of its users, including exchange students and international visiting scholars and administrative staff. Its language programs emphasize doing rather than knowing, so that students learn to speak, listen, read, and write in ways that are immediately useful in a real world setting. The Language Center provides a range of courses in eleven languages, including Spanish for international students and staff (followed by SIELE accreditation), Arab, Chinese, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Russian.
