Maria Sanchez-Mico

Instructor in Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School

Dr. Maria V. Sanchez-Mico is an Instructor in Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS), and serves as the official representative of the University of Seville (US) at the Real Colegio Complutense at Harvard University (RCCHU). A biochemist and neuroscientist by training, she investigates how astrocytic dysfunction contributes to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related neurodegenerative conditions, using advanced in vivo imaging approaches to understand the metabolic and vascular roles of astrocytes across disease progression.

Her research has uncovered key connections between astroglial calcium dysregulation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial impairment in the AD brain, while also expanding into the study of amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA) in anti-Abeta immunotherapies, through interdisciplinary collaborations with vascular neuroscientists and industry partners.

A University of Seville alumna, Dr. Sanchez-Mico earned her PhD at the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS) with highest distinction, and maintains strong ties through mentoring, research collaboration, and her role as RCCHU delegate. An advocate for interdisciplinary and translational science, she is committed to advancing metabolic resilience and neurovascular protection in dementia research.
