PANEL III. Section 1. Ancient Rome

Do ut des: Elites and Euergetism in Roman Towns

One of the most common and relevant practices developed by the local elites in the Roman world was euergetism, which consisted in the financing by the aristocracy or wealthy members of the city of a series of contests, religious celebrations, public works or food distributions for the benefit of the community. This series of donations were key to the very functioning of a Roman town, since without the money of these elites the cities would not have been able to build or offer certain buildings or public services that were basic to the Roman way of life. This paper will show a series of testimonies of the euergetism deployed by the elite in various towns of the Roman Empire. Through these examples, the speaker will try to answer the intentionality and the real purpose that these benefactors had when they made such donations for the benefit of the community.

Legions in Crisis: Gallienus and the Unstable 3rd Century (253-268)

During this half-hour talk, we will explore one of the most turbulent and challenging eras of the Roman Empire, the convulsive 3rd century, focusing on the reign of Publius Licinius Gallienus, spanning from 253 to 268 AD. The presentation will be divided into three blocks of 10 minutes each, allowing for a detailed analysis of the key aspects of this crucial period: 1) The battles fought by Publius Licinius Gallienus (253-268) during his 15-year reign; 2) The military image of Emperor Gallienus in literary sources, Latin epigraphy, art and numismatics, and 3) The devaluation of the currency during the 1st-3rd centuries.
