When Ursula von der Leyen assumed the presidency of the European Commission, she outlined the Commission’s top policy priorities. These political priorities build the framework for the Commission over the next five years and can be summarized under five broad themes: “A European Green Deal;” “A Europe fit for the digital age;” “An economy that works for people;” “A new push for European democracy;” and “Promoting the European way of life.”

On the other side of the Atlantic, a Congressional resolution that lays out a plan to tackle climate change and that has been endorsed and adopted by several prominent United States Senators, Congressmen and Presidential Candidates has been proposed: The Green New Deal. Both the European Green Deal and the American Green New Deal have key common goals. Namely, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and leveraging a necessary climate transition to help fix social problems such as economic inequality, with a commitment to ensure a just and fair transition that respects the rights of citizens. While currently Europe seems poised to consolidate its position as a new leader in the fight against climate change in the global stage, it is also clear that the United States also has a large role to play in averting the climate crisis.

By taking advantage of how the European policy finds echoes and common goals in the American proposal and vice versa, this panel gathers top experts from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss what the agenda should be moving forward and what both approaches can learn from one another.
