The Art of Measuring: Mixed Methods in the Observation of Culture in a New Mediascape

Date:

Tuesday, June 7, 2022, 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Location:

This will be a virtual event (All times are ET).

We are immersed in a new global digital culture, in which information technologies enable for the first time a feasible use of data analysis techniques. This "large-scale cultural analytics” would represent “a new possible third era” (Lozano and Martín, 2018). Rubén Fernández-Costa will present his recent postdoc research (work in progress) in an interdisciplinary setting (journalism and engineering), based on a broad question: could it be possible to impulse social sciences and specially journalism research towards an art of measuring, understanding and solving problems, using both complementary quantitative and qualitative perspectives?

R

Fernández-Costa will share the contribution of Harvard IQSS (Consilience, 2019) to his Ph.D. observational quantitative measurement of the untangible/arts (Human Flourishing Program) in a new and complex mediascape. Also he will share other examples of his work, a collective analysis of Spanish newscasts at Universidad Complutense (OCITV group, 2022) and a published study on transferable skills and their value in arts education and its possible automation (CIVAE 2021, 3rd Interdisciplinary and Virtual Conference on Arts in Education, TAI-URJC).
