SUMMARY:The Art of Measuring: Mixed Methods in the Observation of Culture in a New Mediascape
DESCRIPTION:
We are immersed in a new global digital culture, in which information technologies enable for the first time a feasible use of data analysis techniques. This "large-scale cultural analytics” would represent “a new possible third era” (Lozano and Martín, 2018). Rubén Fernández-Costa will present his recent postdoc research (work in progress) in an interdisciplinary setting (journalism and engineering), based on a broad question: could it be possible to impulse social sciences and specially journalism research towards an art of measuring, understanding and solving problems, using both complementary quantitative and qualitative perspectives?

	<drupal-media data-entity-type="media" data-entity-uuid="9fd121ce-b4ee-4fe3-bf09-3e6db6e2d1a0" alt="R"></drupal-media>

Fernández-Costa will share the contribution of Harvard IQSS (Consilience, 2019) to his Ph.D. observational quantitative measurement of the untangible/arts (Human Flourishing Program) in a new and complex mediascape. Also he will share other examples of his work, a collective analysis of Spanish newscasts at Universidad Complutense (OCITV group, 2022) and a published study on transferable skills and their value in arts education and its possible automation (CIVAE 2021, 3rd Interdisciplinary and Virtual Conference on Arts in Education, TAI-URJC).

	<drupal-media data-entity-type="media" data-entity-uuid="2a6235c7-d697-4b19-be92-41241cea39fc" alt="R2"></drupal-media>

Rubén Fernández-Costa: Ph.D., Journalism and Media studies (UCM, 2021 ‘From Scandal to Mourning: an analysis of the information trends on contemporary art in the online press), after his stays at Boston (Harvard Institute for Quantitative Social Sciences, 2019) and Rome (Royal Academy of Spain, 2020).
