Medieval Art, Harvard, and the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela

This seminar offers an overview of the importance of Harvard University for the study of Spanish Medieval Art. The first lecture examines the history and relevance of the Medieval art collection in the Harvard Museums. The second presents new research on the meanings and art historical significance of one of the masterpieces of medieval art, the "Portal of Glory” of the Cathedral of Santiago. The third lecture introduces students to the Santiago Cathedral Project, one of the most ambitious projects of research and conservation currently underway in major monument in Europe. The headquarters of this project are now at Harvard University’s Real Colegio Complutense, offering students a great opportunity to get involved in the development of several interdisciplinary lines of research, for which they can obtain funding through a fellowship program funded by the Andrew W.
