The Seminar Ludics is chaired by Kathleen Coleman, James Loeb Professor of the Classics at Harvard and Vassiliki Rapti, preceptor in Modern Greek and at Harvard University. It focuses on the concepts of play and games, widely interpreted. It aims at fostering an open dialogue among scholars who are interested in exploring the ludic principle across a broad spectrum of human culture, from literature, rhetoric, and theater to law and politics.
This presentation focuses on the notion of “dance” as one of the various meanings embedded in the Latin terms ludo / ludus. Taking into account ludic and ludicrous aspects of three choreographic works of the last fifty years, we will examine how Ancient Rome has been presented and represented by the moving qualities of the dance medium.
