University of Oviedo

The University of Oviedo is the public institution of higher education and research of the Principality of Asturias, in northern Spain, a region distinguished by its privileged natural environment, where unique landscapes, sea and mountains coexist alongside a rich culinary tradition. With more than 410 years of history, it offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate programs aligned with the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) across all fields of knowledge, including bilingual tracks, double degrees with international universities, Erasmus Mundus and interuniversity master’s programs.

The university community comprises more than 25,000 people: over 21,000 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students; more than 2,000 teaching and research staff; and a technical, management, administration, and services workforce exceeding 1,000 professionals.

Teaching activities are distributed across seven campuses located in the three cities that form Asturias’s central axis—Oviedo, Gijón, and Mieres. These campuses host 17 faculties offering a total of 60 undergraduate degrees, 60 official master’s programs, and 30 doctoral programs in the main fields of knowledge: arts and humanities, sciences, health sciences, social and legal sciences, and engineering.

The University of Oviedo is the leading driver of research in Asturias, with more than 200 accredited research groups. It carries out 80% of the region’s R&D&I activity and provides cutting-edge services and facilities to promote knowledge transfer to the productive sector. Aware that its researchers are among its greatest assets, the University has developed its own funding and support programs to foster talent and promote emerging research initiatives.

Since its foundation, the University of Oviedo has maintained a strong international vocation. Its academic offer combines bilingual degree programs and Erasmus Mundus initiatives with an active commitment to academic mobility through agreements with institutions across all continents. Today, it collaborates with more than 600 universities and educational centers in 63 countries. The University of Oviedo joined the consortium of the Real Colegio Complutense at Harvard in 2022.

Alongside this international outlook, the University is deeply rooted in its regional context. It was a pioneer in university extension activities, aimed at bringing education and culture to all social groups and throughout the entire territory of Asturias.

Embedded in the DNA of the University of Oviedo is the conviction that knowledge generated within the institution must benefit society through effective knowledge transfer. To this end, it works in close collaboration with numerous companies and institutions in the region, resulting in more than 50 endowed chairs and a wide range of research contracts.

Within the framework of social responsibility, the University also provides services to support individuals with specific needs, as well as a solidarity hub dedicated to volunteering and international cooperation initiatives. In addition, the Equality Unit ensures compliance with gender equality policies and promotes work–life balance.
