Javier Álvarez Liébana is currently an Assistant Professor at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. He completed his PhD at the University of Granada, where he focused on the analysis of functional time series. After his time at the University of Oviedo—where he served as Principal Investigator of a project funded through an Article 83 agreement in collaboration with the Health Department of the Principality of Asturias during the pandemic—he worked as an Assistant Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid until September 2025. In recent years, Javier has focused his academic work on biostatistics (neurological data analysis, compositional data, longitudinal data analysis, machine learning), computational social sciences (survey analysis, consulting for political parties and media outlets), network analysis (mobility data, causal inference in networks, urban networks), and the development of open-source software packages. He is also active in science communication through media outlets and social networks.

He has been a fellow of the Real Colegio Complutense under the short-term stay modality during the academic years 2023–2024 (sponsored by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Network Science Institute) and 2024–2025 (sponsored by Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital). He has also been awarded a long-term fellowship from the Real Colegio Complutense for the 2025–2026 academic year (sponsored by Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Northeastern University)
