Fernando Garrido Carreras

Fernando is currently studying a Master in Architecture I at the GSD. He grew up in Madrid and lived there until he moved to London to study a Bachelor in Civil Engineering with a Minor in Environmental Engineering at University College London (UCL).

At UCL he has focused in the design of projects involving solutions and preventions to natural disasters affecting the built environment, especially in locations prone to cyclically suffer. In addition, he has participated with Engineers in Action as design manager in the construction of footbridges spanning over fluvial rivers such as one in Manzini, Eswatini.

On the other hand, he is interested in the behavior of pedestrians in large cities. In London he elaborated an urban design research project awarded Best Research Project of the year at UCL. The study proposes new design analysis techniques of small urban spaces using pedestrian psychological parameters like proxemics, the movement between cyclists and pedestrians, the Dunbar numbers, etc.

He is interested in the role of infrastructure and urban design both locally and globally and its relationship with ecology. By studying at the GSD, he aims to develop a better understanding of architecture and its intersection with civil engineering. He believes the clash of both disciplines might be the solution for the forthcoming challenges in the realm of the built environment and the natural environment.
