Cristina Oñoro Otero

Associate Professor at Complutense University of Madrid in the department of Spanish Language and Literary Theory in the Faculty of Philology. She holds a PhD in Literary Theory and two Masters of Arts in both Literary Theory and Philosophy.
Cristina's  area of expertise is Spanish Contemporary Literature and Women Writers. Her doctoral thesis was the first one devoted to the author Enrique Vila-Matas. It received Premio Extarordinario de Doctorado in 2008 and was published under the title Enrique Vila-Matas. Juegos, ficciones, silencios in 2015 (Visor Libros).

Before joining Complutense University in 2015, she was awarded with a Robert Schuman traineeship at the European Parliament (2009) and with a Post-doc Excellence contract (IDEX program) at Université de Strasbourg (2011-2015). She has been adviser or collaborator of cultural institutions such as Ministerio de Cultura, Fundación Mapfre and Casa de Velázquez.

At Complutense University she teaches Literary Fiction, Aesthetics and Literary Theory. She is the director of the Complutense Summer School La industria del libro en la actualidad: de la edición al lector and of the Innovation Program Leer en comunidad: creación de clubes de lectura dentro y fuera de la universidad. She has been awarded with the Complutense Prize of Excellence in Teaching in 2017, 2019 and 2022.

She has published her work in academic journals such as Revista de Literatura, Bulletin of Spanish Studies, Signa, Quimera or Ínsula.

Recently she has published the non-fiction narrative essay Las que faltaban. Una historia del mundo diferente (Taurus, Penguin Random House, 2022), which reached five editions during the first year. It was awarded the prize Book of the Year (category non-fiction) by the Librarians of Madrid.

In September 2022 she received the “Leonardo BBVA Foundation Grant” (category Creative Writing and Performing Arts) for writing her next book, Señoritas. Una historia transatlántica de la Edad de Plata (1872-1936), which will also take the form of a non-fiction narrative essay.
