Alvaro Torrente

Professor of History of Music at the Complutense University of Madrid

Álvaro Torrente is Professor of Music History at the Complutense University of Madrid, Chair of the Instituto Complutense de Ciencias Musicales (ICCMU), and Associate at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University (2025). He holds a degree in Musicology from the University of Salamanca and a PhD from the University of Cambridge, and has been a Visiting Scholar at New York University and Yale University.

Prof. Torrente has received the AMS Stevenson Award (2008) and the Deustche Musikeditionpreis (2013). His publications include La ópera en España e Hispanoamérica (2001), Devotional Music in the Iberian World (2007), Historia de la Música en España e Hispanoamérica: La música en el siglo XVII (2016), and The Cambridge History of Music in Spain (forthcoming). He is Associate Editor of The Operas of Francesco Cavalli (Bärenreiter Verlag), and his editions of early operas have been revived at prestigious venues such as the Royal Opera House, Bayerische Staatsoper, Theater an der Wien, and Teatro Real.
