Transatlantic StudiesSensorial information mediates not only the subject's perception of space, but also of the self. As such, the senses have shaped the production, circulation, and reception of art in its various modalities. From the materiality of the print book and the light projected upon a screen in a dark room, everyday-sounds sampled in a music album and synesthesia, the arts have conceptualized spaces through the senses. The senses also act as material support of the artwork itself, what renders it perceptible and available to an audience. The artist's exploitation and representation of the senses convey her view of the world but also her implicit assumptions about subjectivity, the world, the other, and their interactions.

The purpose of this conference is to explore how the use of the senses has affected various sorts of media and the psychological, physical and aesthetic impact that they have had on the space within which the human experience develops. This conference attempts to bring together scholars from a myriad of humanistic disciplines that are situated within the scope of American, Latin American, and/or European studies, in order to explore the interrelationships that the senses and spatial constructions have in these various disciplines and, through that exploration, to build connections across the shores of the Atlantic.
