Noble Feud and Warfare in Late Medieval Basque Country
Ekaitz Etxeberria (University of the Basque Country, Spain)
As in many other places in Late Medieval Europe, private wars had an important presence in the Basque Country. Feuding between noble families was a common thing in both urban and rural areas, which often evolved into full-scale conflicts that shaped social relations and political development. The paper will explore how these private wars were fought, focusing on the strategies and tactics employed and trying to estimate the actual dimension of military actions and casualties.
