Harvard Researcher and Aretian Co-Founder Jeremy Burke will present the first ever Atlas of Innovation Districts, developed with fellow Researcher and Co-Founder Ramon Gras Alomà, in an event to be held at the Harvard RCC, in the context of the Harvard WorldWideWeek.
The Atlas of Innovation Districts presents a white paper summarizing key insights from a body of research that the Urban Innovation research team led by Burke and Gras has developed for over 3 years. The report addresses key societal problems of our time:
● How to provide a response to mass job loss as a result of ai, automation and robotics?
● How can we activate the dormant economic capabilities of different cities and regions?
● How can we help shape a knowledge economy which creates prosperity distributed throughout the territory?
The Atlas of Innovation Districts represents the first-of-its-kind systematic study of 50 notable Innovation Districts in the United States: their collective knowhow, specialization, innovation and economic impact, as well as the urban design and social characteristics of the social ecosystems that welcome and enhance them. The report identifies the key ingredients and dynamics behind the success of thriving innovation districts across the US territory.
At Harvard, Jeremy Burke and Ramon Gras have developed a novel methodology, based on complexity science and network theory, to address complex urban challenges, and point out strategic design interventions in the territory, which can unleash the innovation potential of the community. The methodology is inspired by the work by the founder of modern urbanism Ildefons Cerdà, architect and theorist Louis Durand, and mathematician Évariste Galois. The research developed by the Aretian team has recently been featured on MIT Technology Review, CitiesToday and PittsburghQuarterly, among others. The Atlas of Innovation Districts has received endorsements from MIT VP Israel Ruiz and Harvard GSD Professor Jesse Keenan.
