Habitat Loss: Causes, Consequences and Restoration

Date:

Thursday, March 11, 2021, 2:00pm to 3:30pm

Location:

This will be a virtual event via Zoom

Land-use shifts are one of the main components of the anthropogenic global change occurring in our planet and, at the same time, the major driver of biodiversity loss. Habitat loss and fragmentation lead to a wide array of deleterious processes for all the biodiversity occupying areas that face such changes.

Recently it has been proposed a methodology to prioritize areas that need to be restored based on the reduction of the extinction debt (the number of species in an area likely to become extinct). In this talk we will unravel the causes and consequences of habitat loss and explore the critical areas to conserve or restore as well as discuss about the intrinsic value of endangered species in a human-dominated world.
