dia de los muertos

Date and Time

October 29, 2025
05:00PM - 06:00PM EDT

Location

RCCHU Conference Room

This bilingual round table explores the deep cultural and religious roots of Mexico’s Día de Muertos, tracing its evolution from the encounter between pre-Hispanic worldviews and Christian beliefs introduced during the colonial period.

Drawing from history, theology, and anthropology, Dr. Raquel Urroz (UNAM Boston) will discuss the processes of evangelization, indigenous collaboration, and symbolic adaptation that shaped a unique form of popular religiosity in Mexico, while Dr. Michael Motia (UMass Boston) will examine the origins of All Saints Day in Late Antiquity and medieval Europe. Together, they will reflect on how these intertwined traditions continue to find expression in contemporary practices and collective memory.
