Is a new Journal on Architecture and Critical Conservation Theory founded and edited by GSD students. This journal is born from the identification of a void in the conservation field and from the necessity and desire to fulfill it. Reduced to a technical task that ignores its philosophical dimension, or to aesthetic justifications that mask political decisions, the conservation practices have remained under-theorized for almost a century. We believe that prior to any material intervention there are epistemological assumptions that need to be revised in order to develop a richer or more productive understanding of the conservation field.
The presentation of the first volume will consists on four theoretical propositions and their illustration through contemporary architectural examples addressing the contested realms of history, memory, identity, and autonomy. This will be followed by a response of Prof. Michael Hays and PhD students and an open discussion with the audience.
The event will take place on November 16th from 6.30-8.00pm at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (48 Quincy St. Cambridge, MA). It will consist on a general presentation of Volume 1 by the editors, followed by short presentations of the authors, and a discussion with Prof. Michael Hays and the students that will be open to the questions of the audience.
