RCC is pleased to announce this talk organized by Prof. Francisco Prado-Vilar, RCC Fellow and Scientific Director of the Santiago Cathedral Project, featuring Iago Boán Francis, PhD Candidate, in the Department of English and German Philology at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
This talk analyzes the mythical figure of King Richard III created by William Shakespeare, and the character of Richard III who is the heroic protagonist of Sharon K. Penman’s historical novel The Sunne in Splendour (1982). In order to offer an approach to the historical character as objective as possible, it is important to point out that both protagonists represent the two ends of their literary characterization; the monster and the chivalric hero. For our purpose, we have compared and contrasted the historical sources present in both literary texts in an attempt to demystify the character and see whether we can catch a glimpse of the real King behind the myth. However, the Richard we expect to discover is neither Penman’s ideal hero nor Shakespeare’s evil creature but someone in between, a real man of his times.
