RCC is pleased to announce this event at the Center for European Studies at Harvard, featuring Barend Jansen, Assistant General Counsel, Head of Financial and Fiscal Unit, Legal Department, International Monetary Fund. Chaired by RCC Director, José Manuel Martínez Sierra, Jean Monnet ad personam Professor in EU Law and Government, Harvard University.

The European Union is still recovering from the financial crisis that started in 2008. Although the crisis started there, the recovery from it in the United States has been far better than in Europe. Why is that? To answer this question, Barend Jansen, Assistant General Counsel at the International Monetary Fund, will discuss the pillars of their monetary and financial frameworks. These pillars and how they have gradually developed over the years in both regions will be discussed from a legal and institutional perspective, pre-and post-crisis. The talk will subsequently focus on the major challenges ahead to complete the Economic and Monetary Union in Europe.
