A Post Colonial Inquiry of Invasive Species is an interdisciplinary research situated at the boundary of the visual arts, botany and environmental studies, that investigates the colonial history of a small selection of invasive plants. The research project looks closely at the scientific apparatus of botany as a legitimizing force in the field of plant’s knowledge, and the historical means of transport connected to the introduction and dissemination of these plants across the globe.
Miguel Sbastida (1989, Madrid) works at the boundary of the visual arts and environmental studies to create interdisciplinary installations, situated performances and films that communicate the urgency of the climate crisis and challenge our preconceived notions of our relationship with nature.
Sbastida is a postgraduate Harvard University RCC Fellow, and has graduated from an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2017) with the full support of a scholarship from La Caixa Foundation. He completed a BFA at Universidad Complutense of Madrid (2007-12) after his fellow BFA studies in Holland (2011) and Canada (2012). His work has been shown internationally at individual and group exhibitions, including the Bozar Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels; Museo Centro Gaiás, Spain; Locust Projects, Miami; The Powerstation, Dallas, USA; Korea Foundation Gallery, Seoul; CDAN Museum, Spain; CCE Montevideo, Uruguay; Boghossian Foundation, Brussels; or the Netherlands Institute for Media Art, Amsterdam; among others.
