There are approximately 38 million of people affected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) worldwide, with women disproportionately impacted in some areas such as Sub-Saharan Africa. Women get infected with HIV mainly through sexual contact; however, the probability of a woman getting infected per sexual act is relatively low, suggesting that women count on natural defenses involved in protection against HIV infection.
In this talk, we will learn about specific problems associated with HIV infection in women and how the female reproductive tract is naturally protected. In addition, we will explore potential avenues for research to understand how HIV infection is established and for the development of preventive approaches.
