Architects Roi Salgueiro Barrio and Gabriel Kozlowski will present their recent publication The World as an Architectural Project, co-authored with Hashim Sarkis, in conversation with Malkit Shoshan.
The World as an Architectural Project approaches architecture as a planetary practice by studying the multiple tools designers have elaborated to understand processes of global structuring, and to intervene in them. It reveals how, from twentieth century modernity on, such engagement with the world scale both accompanied the consolidation of globalization, and generated alternative visions of an integrated planet. The research thus highlights how the capacity of design to visualize the impact of technological, social, and spatial advancements before they actually take place allows architects to test possible transformations of the earth well before they are realized in practice. Merging spatial, political, and ecological configurations, this genealogy of architectural strategies at the world scale gains a new relevance today, when we are revising our discipline in response to urgent global concerns, from human-induced climate change, to worldwide urbanization, to the need of new forms of cosmopolitics.
