SUMMARY:RCC Postdoc Seminar: Using Prezi instead of PowerPoint to promote context-derived learning
DESCRIPTION:
The classic structure of a lecture consists in explaining a lesson with the support of slides, presented using old-fashioned slide projectors or, in the recent decades, PowerPoint. This program is so widespread that people cannot understand how a class can exist without it. However, while its interface has become very straightforward and has substantially advanced in most recent Microsoft updates, its function remains archaic: longitudinally displaying slides that provide no visual context whatsoever. In that sense, Prezi – a novel application that has revolutionized slide presentations – offers an appealing array of features that give students the tools for remembering important information based on contextual cues rather than simple memorization.

	<drupal-media data-entity-type="media" data-entity-uuid="8884bab6-7d55-40fa-bb77-1fa5741b355d" alt="martaperez"></drupal-media>

In this seminar, we will analyze how both programs work and their differences, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using them. When would your lectures benefit from providing visual contexts? And when is recommended to keep using PowerPoint?

Teaching methods have evolved throughout last decades. In order to learn the different possibilities that Innovative Teaching offers, this seminar will explore how each field can provide ideas that can be applied in other areas. In this way, both participants and assistants will improve their knowledge concerning to how to teach and how to create a better environment in the class, in which students play a more dynamic role. These activities will be held mainly by predoc and postdoc fellows of RCC.

	Speaker: Marta Pérez Rando.
