WAPPP and RCC Fellow Inmaculada Macias-Alonso will discuss her doctoral dissertation “The Effects of Gender Stereotyping On Feedback in Organizations” at the RCC Conference Room. Her work of explores the impact of sex and gender stereotypes on the quantitative and qualitative content of feedback. First she tests whether gender stereotypes appear in feedback confirming and reinforcing the gender-stereotypical characteristics of men and women. Building on this foundation, she will examine the relationship between sex, the content of gender stereotypes, and the assessment of a person's leadership in open-ended feedback. In the final part, she investigates differences in the provision of performance evaluations and negative feedback to men and women when they underperform. The dissertation follows a multi-method approach, with Chapters 1 and 2 using content analysis and quantitative methods on archival data and Chapter 3 using experiments. Data were collected among graduate and undergraduate students in three universities and two countries. Results indicate that sex and gender differences exist in quantitative and qualitative feedback and that these differences are relevant to understand the leadership gap between men and women.
