SUMMARY:Reshaping Ukraine’s Banking Landscape in 2 Years: From Oligarchy to Market
DESCRIPTION:Ukraine’s banking sector has undergone a major transformation since 2014. More than half of all banks were sent into liquidation due to insolvency, while Privatbank, the country’s largest lender, was nationalized. Three years ago, Ukraine’s banking sector served mainly as a funding vehicle for oligarchs and it’s only now that it’s starting to operate as a classic financial intermediary. The National Bank of Ukraine drove all these changes against the backdrop of weak institutional and legal environment with numerous threats aimed at NBU employees. The presentation by Oleh Zamorskyi, Legal Department Director at the NBU, and Vitalii Vavryshchuk, Financial Stability Department Director at the NBU, will cover legal, institutional and economic challenges that NBU faced in the course of the banking sector cleanup. The talk will be chaired by Prof. Howell Jackson.
