Ancient Egyptians performed mummification from the Old Kingdom to Coptic times. Through embalmment they transformed the body, physically and ritually, and during its final stage priests placed cartonnages and masks over the mummy. In this conference we will explore the mummification process and its relation to masks and cartonnages from Ptolemaic period to the portraits of Fayum at the beginning of the Roman era.
