Dendrochronology is the science of dating and reading growth rings in the wood of trees and shrubs. Based on the identification, dating, and measuring of these rings that plants create every year, we can dig into the past and infer how previous environments were, study long-term biological processes, or describe cultural events occurred in the forest. In this seminar we will learn how wood rings are created, the information that they are encoding in the process and some of the applications of this information for ecological research. As practice is worth a thousand words, during the seminar we will collect some wood samples and we will measure rings of samples used in ongoing research. Be ready for working as a real ecologist!
