This seminar will present the first outcomes of this research project examining the experiences of university professors, students, researchers and other academic professionals forced into exile by war, political repression, totalitarian regimes and purges. Focusing specifically on the academic sphere, the project explores how displaced scholars maintained intellectual exchange, rebuilt professional networks and recreated academic communities across borders, a process conceptualised as a “symbolic campus transfer.” It also investigates the role of humanitarian organisations, international institutions and host countries in supporting academic continuity, knowledge exchange and new research opportunities, as well as the potential transfer of acquired expertise back to countries of origin.
