Cities are concentrations of human potential that, with an adequate political leadership, can easily become innovation labs. In this talk we will review the main strategies followed by Barcelona and Madrid City Councils to generate an open innovation ecosystem through citizens’ empowerment and the promotion of new forms of collaboration among governments, businesses, non-profits, citizen groups and other stakeholders. The results presented here are part of the Harvard Kennedy School research project “Discovering who transforms Barcelona and Madrid: Redefining public and private roles in urban transformation. Collaboration models and community impact” led by Victòria Alsina Burgués.
