AGORA

We will screen and discuss the Spanish movie Agora. This biographical movie tells the story of Hypatia of Alexandria (c. 350–370; died 415 AD) a female philosopher, astronomer and mathematician; and one of the most influential -although overlooked- scientists in history. In this film, the relationship between religion and science is highlighted in an historical framework of deep social changes and religious turmoil. Hypatia fought to preserve the Greek mathematical and astronomical heritage and challenged the Geocentric Ptolemaic system in an extremely difficult historical context. Our goal is highlighting the importance of this female scientist and explaining her most relevant contributions through cinema.
