**This lecture will be in Spanish (Castilian)**

The *Bibliotheca Hispanica*, published in London in 1591 by the politician and Hispanist Richard Perceval, is a seminal work for understanding the first systematic encounters between the Spanish language and the English-speaking public. Considered one of the earliest accounts of Spanish language instruction in late 16th-century England and a milestone in the history of bilingual Spanish-English lexicography, the work combines a grammar and a lexical repertoire that allow for an exploration of the Spanish language from linguistic, pedagogical, historical and ideological perspectives.

In short, the lecture aims to demonstrate that the *Bibliotheca Hispanica* is not merely a grammar and a dictionary intended for learning Spanish, but rather a complex linguistic, educational and cultural project that reflects the growing interest in the Spanish language and culture in Elizabethan England and that plays a key role in the history of the origins of Spanish language instruction and lexicography in the English-speaking world, which would culminate in the 19th and early 20th centuries with the birth of the burgeoning American Hispanism.
