Postdoc Seminar in Innovative Teaching: Basics in genetic inheritance and molecular pathology

Date:

Monday, September 23, 2019, 6:00pm to 7:30pm

Location:

RCC Conference Room, 26 Trowbridge St., Cambridge MA.

This class is focused on teaching the basics of genetic inheritance, and the relation of this genes with and the way they are transmitted with the physical characteristics and certain diseases.

The attendees will learn the principles of the known as “Mendelian inheritance”, participating by themselves in the phenomenon of the chromosomic segregation and the joining of parental genes to form a new individual that will have specific variants of genes, which exist in the real world, and understand the mechanism of conditions such as color blindness, albinism and other genetic-related traits.

This is a participatory activity, which involves learning through the explanation of a series of basic concepts of biology, scientific-accurate handicrafts and collaboration, and will provide a better understanding of the principles of biological inheritance. To boost the learning of the concepts and makes them closer to the attendees’ environment, they will be informed about certain activities useful to meet real situations related with the genetic inheritance.

The activity is aimed at all audiences, mainly those without scientific background, and is easily scalable to different educational levels, number of people and anywhere in the world.

Teaching methods have evolved throughout last decades. In order to learn the different possibilities that Innovative Teaching offers, this seminar will explore how each field can provide ideas that can be applied in other areas. In this way, both participants and assistants will improve their knowledge concerning to how to teach and how to create a better environment in the class, in which students play a more dynamic role. These activities will be held mainly by predoc and postdoc fellows of RCC.
