Learning dead languages as Akkadian, Greek or Latin allows a more precise approaching to the original historical sources (primary sources) and a better understanding of ancient modes of thinking and believing. From a scientific perspective, dominating these languages and writing systems is essential for conducting research on politic systems, social structures, and religious worlds of ancient cultures. In this sense, while Greek and Latin seem to be better integrated in the Spanish university system, other ancient languages such as Sumerian and Akkadian from ancient Mesopotamia or Egyptian from Pharaonic period are not in the spotlight and few universities in Spain have qualified specialists for their teaching. At the University of Alcala, as part of our work focused on Pharaonic Egypt, we offer introductory and advance courses on Egyptian language and writing.

In this RCC seminar we will offer a short introduction to the Egyptian language, its discovery process, and to the way in which the hieroglyphic system works. We will try to explain the methodologies employed in the process of learning Egyptian hieroglyphs in a concise and easy way. Despite being an introductory session, we intend to invite participants to learn the complexity of one of the most attractive writing systems of antiquity, try to do some practice with exercises and, especially, meet other fields and disciplines that deal indirectly with ancient studies.
