Why can the same situation contribute to well-being in such different ways for different people? Can we find a shared language that makes our experiences understandable to others? This presentation proposes a heuristic framework for exploring these differences and making our internal experiential “geography” intelligible to others and to ourselves. As a complement to quantitative research on well-being and flourishing, this presentation introduces a taxonomy of their phenomenological sources: a functional and tentative classification of the ways in which something comes to be experienced as a source of well-being and the meanings it takes on for each person. Through examples and case studies, the talk will explore how this framework might contribute to our understanding of experience and to the development of more sensitive, tailored, and personalized interventions.
