It is widely recognized that books can help children develop empathy, respect, and openness towards others. However, there is still limited empirical research to support this claim.

This conference presents a research project on the use of multicultural picturebooks to foster intercultural competence and social values among 8–9-year-old students. Through stories that address diversity, migration, racism, exclusion, literacy, and different kinds of families, the study examines whether literature can encourage children to reflect on the world around them and better understand different perspectives.

The project also emphasizes the importance of classroom discussion and the role of teachers in helping children engage with these topics in a thoughtful and meaningful way. Join us to discover how picturebooks can become a powerful educational tool for building more inclusive classrooms and a more respectful society.
