RCC is pleased to announce this talk by [José Ignacio Martínez Ruiz](https://investigacion.us.es/sisius/sis_showpub.php?idpers=7530), Professor of History of the Economy,[ Seville University](http://www.us.es/eng), and RCC Fellow.

Trading from the British colonies and Plantations to the Spanish colonies in the Americas and to Old Spain (the Canary Islands included) is documented since the 1640s. Much more intense and relevant than that had been previously considered, some historians have argued for it that the English-speaking Atlantic, above all in the Seventeenth Century, should be understood as a Spanish periphery (Gould, 2007). Restrictive trading policies implemented by London in 1651, 1660, and 1663 altered dramatically the Atlantic map of commerce. Some of the old trading routes survived whereas others almost vanished as a result of the enforcement of the Navigation Acts.
