Internationalisation has become a defining feature of contemporary higher education. Yet language remains surprisingly peripheral in many accounts of how it operates in teaching, learning, researching and constructing knowledge.

This presentation revisits internationalisation through a linguistic and educational lens, bringing together two scholarly traditions that seldom intersect: the study of global higher education and the study of language as a resource for academic participation.

Drawing on examples from the US and Europe, the talk invites a reconsideration of internationalisation itself, asking what new insights emerge when language is placed at the centre rather than at the margins of the discussion.
