 Since 1901, the Nobel Prize has been honoring men and women for outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and for work in peace. This event will review the 2021 Nobel Prizes in economic sciences (for contributions to labour economics and to the analysis of causal relationships) and medicine (for explaining how temperature and mechanical stimulus initiate signals in our nervous system). The speakers will briefly go through the key aspects of each of the fields’ achievements that lead to this important distinction.

 For the Economics Nobel Prize, we will deepen into the labour market and the conclusions about cause and effect that can be drawn from natural experiments. Specifically, we will learn the insights done by David Card on the labour market effects of minimum wages, immigration and education, and the methodological challenges to infer cause-effect conclusions from natural experiments addressed by Joshua Angrist and Guido Imbens.

 For the Medicine Nobel Prize, we will learn about the research made by David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian to identify significant missing links in the complex interplay between our senses and the environment. Thanks to their breakthrough discoveries, we can explain how heat, cold, and mechanical stimuli initiate the nerve impulses that allow us to perceive and adapt to the constantly changing surroundings. We will also discuss how this knowledge is being used to develop treatments for different disease conditions.
